Call for Fics for the Writercon Library

The Writercon Fic Library is different from the Writercon Archive maintained by [info]chrisleeoctaves. (That is a wonderful resource, so if you haven't already, go visit and submit fic.)

But back to the Fic Library. It is, or will be, a much more ephemeral collection of fic that will be available in the Hospitality Suite. Con goers can enjoy a story during downtime or check one out for a few hours.

If you would like to submit a hard copy of a story or stories, email me at missmurchison at gmail dot com with the following info:

-title
-author
-fandom
-pairing or gen
-approximate word count (see below for length restrictions)
-short summary (100 words or less for our labels - longer summaries can go on the first page of your fic)
-website (if you would like this included)
-whether you will mail your fic or bring it with you

Print out your fic, 3-hole punch the pages, and put them in a report binder. (Cheapest kind works fine. But loose pages get torn and lost easily.) If you aren't attending, email me and I'll let you know where to mail the fic or, if it's short, I'll print it for you. I'll bring along extra binders and labels for all the fic I'm informed about ahead of time.

I'll also create a "catalog" that I'll post online to make it easier for people to find fic they didn't have time to finish or other fic by the same author.

On the last day of the con, all the fics will be put up for adoption unless otherwise noted. Last time, people grabbed the stories to read on the trip back and everything had a home. So if you want your hard copy back, mark this information clearly on the front cover.

Fic requirements

-If you submit more than one fic, provide stories from different categories and fandoms, if possible. We'd like a good variety.

-You may submit fics of up to 20,000 words. (Yes, you may go 500 words over that limit. No, don't send all of your 300,000 word saga. Remember, it's just a weekend con!)

-If you want to share a fic of over 20,000 words, print out a sample and/or provide a URL for the rest of the story.

-If you have several short fics, please consider submitting them together, especially if they are part of a series.

-Collections of drabbles and other very short fics may be submitted - in fact they're a great idea. But please place as many as possible in one collection and provide a title for the collection, not the individual fics. For instance, print out all your drabbles about a particular 'ship and label them "Spectacular and Sexy Spander Shorts." Or group them by rating, fandom, etc.

Let me know if you have any questions or if you notice I've forgotten something important.

I assume this doesn't need to be fic written for the con specifically, does it?

No, definitely not.

Just a quick question: Can we bring more than one story/collection to WriterCon, as long as they are separately bound? I have one trilogy that runs about 20K; while I think it's some of my best writing, it's also maybe longer than what some people want to read in their spare time, so I'd also like to bring a collection of my shorter fics for those looking to browse shorter and/or lighter fare.

[info]missmurchison

May 28 2009, 14:30:59 UTC 3 years ago

That would be great. You can also bring the first part of your trilogy with a URL printed at the end for the rest, if you'd like.

Great idea. Will definitely bring something with me or post it if - heaven forbid - something stops me!

Nothing will be allowed to stop you. I forbid it. But let me know what you'll be bringing when you decide.

Curses! My one fic so far is 4k over -- seems silly to excerpt that! Anyway, I'm presuming you should only be told about written fics and not ones that are currently only WIPs or gleams in the eye -- when is the latest that a fic can be formally submitted?

[info]missmurchison

May 29 2009, 02:55:42 UTC 3 years ago

You could bring one in at the last minute, but it wouldn't be on the main list, which might make it hard for people to find the rest of the story, if you're sending an excerpt. If you're mailing it, I'd like people to send them a couple of weeks before the con just in case, especially if they're coming from abroad.

And WIPs are okay, as long as they are clearly marked as such.

If we only write in one fandom/pairing, how many are we allowed to submit?

[info]missmurchison

June 10 2009, 14:09:03 UTC 2 years ago

Why are you making me think about rules before 10 a.m.? How about no more than 60,000 words total, which would be three fics of the maximum length or any combo of shorter ones? Could you give me several from along your timeline? (And maybe that part of NE where Xander and Spike get in a bar fight and wind up cruising around with Dawn and her friends in the back seat. I love that bit.)

If you don't like that answer, ask me to make up another.

Damn, I hate responsibility;)

Was just wondering - because I'm still pondering which fics to submit - is there anyway for writers to get feedback? Is the idea that we do that informally with each other in person, or is there some sort of written something or other? I was thinking it'd be quite nifty to get handwritten comments from people you'd actually met.

[info]missmurchison

July 7 2009, 03:20:05 UTC 2 years ago

There's no formal arrangement for that, but you should definitely put your email on the fic and add a request for feedback. I'll be putting a list online of the fics submitted with links to the authors' sites and emails as well.

like what fandoms need representing? I've only written for two and I wrote a crossover with those same two! I'm very limited:-)

Pretty much everything is needed, including Buffyverse, although we have more of that than anything else. Please submit!

I'd like to bring an anthology of drabbles from the [info]tw100. I'm going to request comm members submit up to five drabbles which I will compile in one binder.

How would this work submission-wise? Can it even work? Aiyee!

[info]missmurchison

July 7 2009, 19:48:24 UTC 2 years ago

No problem. We'll just list them as multiple authors and use the comm as a link.

I have three picked out so far, but all in the BtVS fandom (not all Spuffy, though. More gen-type fics) The only thing I have that is in another fandom is a BtVS/Torchwood crossover that is just a slashy pwp (and it's sequel which is more Spuffy than not.) Shall I stick with the BtVS fics or are you being inundated with too many in that fandom?

Here's what I've printed out, or will be printing when I replace the ink cartridge:

title – Old Friends
author - Slaymesoftly
fandom - BtVS
pairing or gen – gen with hints of Gethan
approximate word count - 8500 + or -
short summary – Set some time after NFA, references some comic events. Riley shows up at Council HQ to offer Giles a chance to save Ethan from being executed. Buffy accompanies him to the prison and finds two surprises there. All three prisoners are liberated and brought back to the Headquarters to be patched up and fed. Now to decide what to do with them….

title – You Can’t Go Home
author – Slaymesoftly
fandom – BtVS
pairing – Gethan
word count – 1843
summary – Years before Giles becomes Buffy’s watcher, he gets a visitor from his past who wants to spend the holidays with him. They slip easily into a physical relationship that masks, for a short while, the very different paths they’ve chosen. A bit angsty.

title – He Ain’t Heavy
author – Slaymesoftly
fandom – BtVS
pairing or gen – Spike, Xander friendship; Spuffy by implication
word count – 2400
summary – BtVS, season VI. Someone had to find Spike and get him home after Buffy beat him. It could have been Xander, whose basic decency is featured in this fic.

Let me know if this is too much of one fandom. I'll probably bring them with me unless I have them ready to go by the end of the week. Oops! That's tomorrow. Okay, maybe get them in the mail by Monday...

These are fine, I think we have a lot of Buffy fics. And, of course slash and porn are fine with this group so you can bring that if you'd like. In fact, I'll probably get complaints if there's not enough slashy porn!

[info]mintwitch

July 9 2009, 17:25:54 UTC 2 years ago

Title: The Adventures of Stickman and Blob
Author: Mintwitch
Fandom: Queer As Folk (US)
Pairing: Gen (more or less)
Word Count: 3807
Summary: When Brian Kinney met Michael Novotny – an origin story

I'll bring it with me.

Thanks for doing it again!
